Easton Press leather edition of Charles Frazier's "Cold Mountain, " a COLLECTOR's edition, Personally SIGNED by Charles Frazier, published in 1999. Bound in green leather, the book has blue/gray moire silk leaves, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges, a satin book marker---in FINE condition. Charles Frazier, who was born in 1950, is an American novelist. Frazier was born in Asheville, North Carolina and graduate from the University of N. In English from the University of South Carolina in 1986 and has taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder and at North Carolina State.

Traces the journey of Inman, a wounded deserter from the Confederate army near the end of the American Civil War. It follows his harrowing journey from deserting the army to finding his way back to the woman he left behind, Ada, who waits for him, dealing with all kinds of hardships herself. The power of Ada and Inman's love, and their dedication to reuniting, is the driving force of the novel, along with Frazier's incorporation of historical context. The work is rich in the culture and sensibilities of the North Carolina mountains and is based on local history and stories handed down by Frazier's father about Frazier's great-great-uncle William Pinkney Inman. Inman, who was from the area around Cold Mountain in western North Carolina, served in the Confederate Army from which he deserted after being wounded twice and is reputedly buried in a local cemetery. The real Inman served as a private in Company F of the 25th North Carolina Infantry, and his regiment did participate in the fighting in the Siege of Petersburg. Inman survives his trek homeward by sleeping in cribs, foraging for food, and even spending a night squatting inside a hollow tree. For the most part, he finds kind individuals who will share what little food they have, and the goat woman not only shares her food but her bed----with no sex! The struggles of Ada and her companion, Ruby, to survive the absence of men all away fighting in the war---is an epic challenge.
